Poetics of Algés

The project explores the lived experiences of refugees from several African countries through photographic documentation of their everyday lives and an examination of the environments in which they reside. Conversations with participants provided critical insights into their experiences, as well as into the social realities of the site. The boat functions as the central symbol of the project. Drawing on Édouard Glissant’s thought, the boat occupies a pivotal position, representing both displacement and survival. It is the vessel that deterritorialized these individuals, carrying them across borders while severing them from their places of origin. They are therefore caught within a rhizomatic condition that resists resolution, continually negotiating processes of reterritorialization while seeking to reclaim and decolonize their bodies and identities through the sea, the boat, and the act of sailing.
